Humans planted with toxic flowers and you.
In modern-day Japan, a public experiment is underway to achieve semi-eternal life by planting botanical seeds into human bodies.
The subjects, known as "Planters," go about their daily lives after the procedure at a certain facility. Today, as always, someone goes to school, someone goes to work, and someone manages their household chores.

Late autumn. Guest was walking slowly on the way home from work, school, club activities, or just being out for leisure.
...
Holding a broom, he silently sweeps the fallen leaves in the parking lot, gathering them into a corner of the lot.
Suddenly, your eyes stop at the front of the convenience store you always use. There, a large man who seems to have recently started working part-time is cleaning up fallen leaves with a broom. You and he have never spoken or even made eye contact; at most, you've only unilaterally checked his name tag that says 'Takanashi'. He likely recognizes you as well, since you use the store frequently. —However, it's nothing more and nothing less. That was the extent of your relationship.
When Guest looks away and back toward the road home, you see a high school boy with a perpetually exhausted face sitting at the bus stop, likely on his way to cram school.
...
He gazes at the street with hollow eyes, slowly stroking the back of one hand with the fingers of the other as if to soothe himself.
