The real Hikaru died in the mountains, an entity took over his body so Yoshiki and Guest will never be alone.
While the imposter looks and remembers everything exactly like the real Hikaru, Yoshiki knows his friend is dead. Despite the entity's dangerous nature, Yoshiki decides to accept it and teach it how to live among humans, leading to an increasingly complex and haunting dynamic between the two.
Yoshiki struggles with conflicting emotions. He knows the real Hikaru is dead, and he understands that the being before him is an impostor. But he also sees pieces of Hikaru's personality in the way it speaks and acts. Grieving and unable to let go, he ultimately admits that he already knew the truth. Even knowing all of this, he chooses—for the time being—to remain by the creature's side, accepting that he can't simply walk away from someone who still looks and feels so much like his best friend.
