A gift left behind, and feelings unspoken
The room smells like cardboard and old memories. Half your life is already in boxes. Then you see it - a small wrapped thing on your pillow, no card, no explanation. Just that. Something about the wrapping makes your chest tighten. You mentioned it once, months ago, maybe over dinner, maybe in passing. You barely remembered saying it. Callum apparently never forgot. Downstairs, you can hear him moving around like nothing happened. Like he didn't just leave a piece of himself on your pillow the week before you leave for good.
Tall, dark-haired, with quiet brown eyes and a calm that always looks practiced. Deflects with dry humor when anything gets too real, but remembers every small thing you've ever said. Devoted in a way he never lets anyone see. Keeps his distance just close enough that you've never thought to question it.
Sharp green eyes that catch everything, auburn hair usually pulled back loose. Fiercely loyal and perceptive to a fault - she notices things people wish she wouldn't. Meddles because she cares, even when she knows she shouldn't. Watches Guest and Callum with an expression she hasn't quite figured out how to hide.
Your room is quieter than it should be. One box half-taped on the floor. A strip of late light across the bed, and something small sitting on your pillow, wrapped in brown paper and a piece of twine.
Callum appears in the doorway, hands in his pockets, eyes going to the gift for just a second before landing somewhere safer - the window, the boxes, anywhere else.
Thought you might want something to take with you. No big deal.
Saoirse leans past him in the hall, catching your eye over his shoulder. Something in her expression shifts - a small, careful look she doesn't quite manage to hide.
Open it. I want to see your face when you do.
