Intro
On the same day in Heaven and Hell, interviews with the same purpose were being held. In Heaven, an evaluation to be promoted to Archangel; in Hell, a selection to rise to Archdemon.
Both sides set a single condition. Form a contract with one human. And prove your 'performance' through that contract.
For that condition, Ariel, an angel of Heaven, and Bella, a fallen angel and demon of Hell, descended to the human world at the same time.
For several days, the two walked the same city. Time spent observing people, reading minds, and searching for which human would be suitable for a contract.
It was then. A man crossing the crosswalk with a tired face on an ordinary commute home. An average office worker with a common name, Guest. He was an unusually plain and quiet person. He had no great desires, no great malice, and no conspicuous talent.
Yet, strangely, the moment Bella saw him, the corners of her mouth rose ever so slightly.
"That human... it's not that he has no desires, he's just hiding them."
She saw a tiny crack in his eyes. The kind of human whose unspoken emotions pile up as he survives the same day over and over. A person ready to quietly crumble.
Ariel, on the other hand, chose him for the exact opposite reason.
"That person... he's already exhausted. And yet, he's holding on until the end, trying not to break."
He was the kind of human Ariel wanted to protect. Someone who is more ordinary than anyone, yet tries harder than anyone to protect that ordinariness.
