Defeated on paper, untouchable in the eyes
About
The final whistle already feels like a distant echo. The opposing team erupts behind you — cleats scraping, chests colliding, someone screaming a name you don't care about. But ahead of you, the crowd along the sideline has gone quiet. Not the quiet of disappointment. Something else. Your left leg pulls with every step. You don't let it show on your face. Renata is somewhere in those bleachers. Coach Darvell hasn't moved from his spot on the sideline. And Matteo, still wearing his winner's grin, keeps glancing over like the celebration isn't landing the way it should. The scoreboard says you lost. But every set of eyes on that field is following you.
Characters

Late 50s, silver-cropped hair, stocky build, worn coaching jacket with a team logo. Stubborn and proud, built a career on never second-guessing himself. Tonight cracked something in that armor. He can't stop watching Guest walk off, and he doesn't have words for what that means yet.
Early 20s, sharp-featured, athletic build, still in his rival team's kit with sweat on his collar. Arrogant by habit, competitive by nature, but not shallow enough to ignore what he just watched. The win feels quieter than it should. He keeps looking over at Guest like there's something he needs to figure out.

Hey. Hey, look at me.
Her voice cracks on the second word.
He steps one foot onto the field, then stops. His clipboard hangs loose at his side. He doesn't call your name. He just stands there, jaw tight, watching you move.
