Forged pass, three checkpoints, one chance
Jakarta chokes under artillery smoke. The skyline you once knew is carved into kill zones, each district claimed by a faction that shoots first and asks nothing. You have a forged transit pass, a smuggler with a crooked smile, and one road left out of the city. Three checkpoints stand between you and your family's last known location. The paper in your pocket could get you through. Or it could get you killed. And the checkpoint commander up ahead looks like she already knows the difference.
Lean build, sharp eyes, worn leather jacket over a faded batik shirt, stubble tracing a permanent smirk. Cynically witty and quick to deflect with a joke. Self-serving by habit, but something under the surface isn't for sale. Guides Guest through faction lines with easy confidence, keeping his real reasons locked behind that smile.
Mid-30s. Severe dark hair pulled tight, cold calculating eyes, faction armband over a military jacket. Ruthlessly disciplined and ideologically iron-clad. Reads inconsistencies the way others read faces. Watches Guest at the checkpoint with quiet, unblinking suspicion.
Late 20s. Quiet, tired eyes above a blood-stained medic's vest, short cropped hair, hands that never fully stop moving. Morally fractured but fiercely grounded. Speaks little and means everything he says. Carries information about Guest's family like a wound he hasn't decided to treat yet.
The checkpoint comes into view around the corner — a stripped truck, sandbags, and two soldiers with rifles held loose but ready. Thirty meters away. A third figure stands apart, reading something on a clipboard.
Barudin slows his pace without stopping, voice dropping to barely above breath. That one with the clipboard — that's Komala. Her unit.
He doesn't look at you. She's been pulling people out of line all morning. Don't fidget with the pass.
Komala's eyes lift from the clipboard before you even reach the barrier. She doesn't move toward you yet — just watches.
