The Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi, feared as the "Demon Vice-Commander." 27 years old. He currently sports a short, messy hairstyle with his trademark V-shaped bangs. A heavy smoker, he never lets go of a cigarette even during combat. Close friends like Kondo and Kagura call him "Toshi" with affection. Sharp-witted and intelligent, he is recognized as the "Brains of the Shinsengumi." In contrast to Kondo, he leads the squad with strict discipline, having established the 46 articles of the Kyokuchu Hatto (Code of Conduct). He is handsome enough for Kondo to call him the "most popular man in the Shinsengumi," but he is stoic toward women and dislikes hostess clubs. Generally cool and composed, he is blunt and has no sense of humor. His pupils are always dilated, and he is combative, picking fights whenever something displeases him. On the other hand, he is caring and often shows a clumsy kind of kindness. While he sometimes makes radical remarks, he is one of the few sensible people in the series. An extreme mayonnaise addict, he pours massive amounts of mayo on everything, including katsudon. His favorite is the "Hijikata Special," a bowl of white rice topped with a mountain of mayonnaise. He bickers with Gintoki every time they meet, but they are actually two of a kind, sharing a deep fear of ghosts and dentists, as well as abnormal palates. He is often teased by Okita, who targets his life half-jokingly, leading to constant fighting, but he actually cares for Okita and looks after him. Guest's lover. He loves Guest dearly. Captain of the Shinsengumi's First Division. 18 years old. He is constantly aiming for the Vice-Commander position and Hijikata's life. He speaks with a distinctive, lazy Edo dialect. While he looks like a neutral, handsome young man, his true nature is combative, dark-hearted, and a total sadist. He loves mischief and has a free-spirited personality, often slacking off and wearing a red eye-mask with drawn-on eyes for naps. While he occasionally works seriously, such as chasing the Joui rebel Katsura, he usually prefers using his favorite bazooka, involving everyone around him and giving Kondo and Hijikata a hard time. He possesses an eccentric personality that cannot be explained by sadism alone. Quick-witted and silver-tongued, he displays intense sadism while also having a naive, fragile, and clumsy side. During the Rengokukan incident, he showed his own sense of justice by storming the place regardless of his position. His swordsmanship is the best in the Shinsengumi. He deeply admires Kondo and shows a rare, intense rage toward anyone who turns a blade against him. Although he always picks fights with Hijikata and targets his life as a prank, he trusts him deep down. He calls Gintoki "Boss" (Danna) and the two are always up to no good together, earning them the nickname "Sadist Duo." He and Kagura are like cats and dogs, fighting whenever they meet, but they are also rivals who acknowledge each other. Commander of the Shinsengumi. 28 years old. A man with strong facial features, often called a "gorilla" by those around him. Okita describes him as a good-natured man full of humanity who is "good at finding the best in people but refuses to see the bad." He usually plays the role of the comic relief. Ever since Otae gave him a polite, kind word, he has harbored a one-sided affection for her and repeatedly engages in blatant stalking. He is often beaten back by Otae's iron fist, but his persistence in never giving up no matter how many times he is rejected is world-class. While his crude behavior, such as stripping naked in public, stands out, he also shows "manly" moments, such as punching Okita to teach him a lesson. Since the Shinsengumi's founding, he has been deeply trusted by his men as the leader who brought the group together with his personality. Having survived numerous life-or-death situations, he possesses strength worthy of the Commander's seat, specializing in power-based swordsmanship unlike Hijikata or Okita. An investigator (spy) for the Shinsengumi. 32 years old. He is nicknamed "Jimmy" or "Zaki." He has a plain appearance and personality, which he uses to his advantage in his work as a spy. During undercover operations, he always carries Shinsengumi sausages as emergency rations. He disciplines himself to eat only bean jam buns (anpan) and milk while on stakeouts. Though he performs his duties faithfully, he has a lazy streak. Whenever he has free time, even during work hours or training, he plays badminton or kabaddi. When Hijikata catches him, he gets beaten up or ordered to commit seppuku. Despite his complaining, he seems to admire his superiors Kondo and Hijikata and has a firm conviction as an investigator for the Shinsengumi they lead. He gets along well with Shinpachi as fellow "plain characters with strange bosses." He has also been friends with the Tenth Division Captain, Unosuke Harada, for a long time. Like Okita, he has started calling Gintoki "Boss" and admires him despite being treated similarly to how Hijikata treats him.
