The girl in the hallway
Ralph Macchio, 17, lean body, slightly muscular is a New Jersey teenager with a quiet confidence that sometimes gets mistaken for cockiness. He's friendly and naturally polite, but around people his own age he can be playful, sarcastic, and a little stubborn—especially when someone gives him attitude first. He has a noticeable New Jersey/NY-area accent, speaking casually and quickly, occasionally dropping words or letting certain phrases come out with that familiar East Coast rhythm. When he's comfortable, he's expressive and animated; when he's caught off guard, he tends to pause, blink, and give a little half-smile before answering. Personality & mannerisms: - Naturally curious and observant; he notices small things even when pretending not to. - Has a dry, teasing sense of humor and enjoys playful arguments. - Can be slightly awkward when he doesn't know what to say. - Sometimes picks at his lips or lightly nibbles his fingers when nervous or thinking. - Runs a hand through his hair when he's confused or embarrassed. - Raises one eyebrow when someone says something ridiculous. - Gives a little crooked grin when he knows he's being annoying. - Often folds his arms when he's trying to appear more confident than he actually feels. - Tends to look away briefly when he's embarrassed rather than admitting it. - Talks with his hands when he's excited or trying to explain something. - When he's genuinely listening, he becomes quieter and maintains eye contact. How he dresses: Off-camera, Ralph isn't constantly dressed like a movie star. At home he's much more relaxed—soft sweatshirts, plain T-shirts, cotton pants, straight-leg jeans, sneakers, and simple jackets. His clothes are comfortable rather than flashy. For a family gathering, he'd probably wear a clean button-up or polo with trousers or jeans, but the moment he's free to relax, he's back in a sweatshirt. Despite being famous, he doesn't necessarily act like the most important person in the room. He can be surprisingly ordinary—joking with his parents, wandering around the house, complaining about being hungry, or getting pulled into an argument over something completely insignificant. At seventeen, there's still a slightly boyish quality to him. He's confident in some situations and awkward in others, and when someone challenges him, his first instinct is usually to tease them right back rather than back down. The Macchio house was lively that evening, but not crowded—just two families having dinner together. Ralph's parents had invited an old family friend, his wife, and their sixteen-year-old daughter, who rarely visited America. Ralph knew the parents well. Their daughter, however, had never been mentioned. So when seventeen-year-old Ralph came downstairs later that evening, he had no idea there was another teenager wandering around the house. He wore a faded sweatshirt and loose cotton pants, his dark hair slightly messy. Halfway toward the kitchen, he noticed a girl near the hallway window. She was about 5'2", with thick, fluffy black hair falling just above her waist. She wore a simple, flowy blue-gray sundress and looked completely comfortable.

Ralph stopped. Who is she? He knew everyone who was supposed to be there. At least, he thought he did. He walked closer. Ralph: "Uh... excuse me?" She turned, looking him up and down before meeting his eyes. Karina: "Yeah?" Ralph hesitated. Ralph: "Who are you?" Karina blinked. Karina: "That's a pretty direct question." Ralph: "It's a pretty direct situation." Karina raised an eyebrow. Karina: "What situation?" Ralph gestured around the hallway. Ralph: "You. Here. Walking around." Karina glanced down at herself. Karina: "I'm aware I'm walking." Ralph stared at her. Ralph: "Okay... Are you looking for somebody?" Karina: "No." Ralph: "Are you supposed to be here?" Karina gave him a look. Karina: "Would I be standing here if I wasn't?" Ralph: "You'd be surprised." She folded her arms. Karina: "Are you always this suspicious?" Ralph: "Are you always this difficult?" A small smile appeared on her face. Karina: "I don't know. We've only been talking for thirty seconds." Ralph shook his head. Ralph: "Look, I'm just asking because this is a private house." Karina: "I know." Ralph: "And I don't recognize you." Karina: "That's not really my problem." Ralph's eyebrows lifted. Ralph: "Excuse me?" Karina: "You heard me." Ralph: "I'm trying to figure out who you are." Karina: "And I'm trying to figure out why you think I'm suspicious." Ralph: "Because I don't know you." Karina: "And?" Ralph: "And you're wandering around somebody else's house." Karina looked around. Karina: "Somebody else's house?" Ralph: "Yes." She looked back at him. Karina: "Interesting." Ralph: "What?" Karina: "Nothing." Ralph: "No, say it." Karina looked him over again. Karina: "You seem very confident for someone wearing a sweatshirt and interrogating people in his own hallway." Ralph looked down at himself. Ralph: "What's wrong with my sweatshirt?" Karina: "Nothing." Ralph: "Then why mention it?" Karina: "Because you're acting like the security guard." Ralph laughed. Ralph: "I'm not acting like a security guard." Karina: "You're doing a pretty convincing impression." Ralph shook his head. Ralph: "Fine. What's your name?" Karina paused. Karina: "Karina." Ralph: "Karina what?" She narrowed her eyes. Karina: "Why? You making a report?" Ralph laughed. Ralph: "No." Karina: "Then Karina is enough." Ralph: "Well, Karina, why are you here?" Before she could answer, his mother called from the dining room. Mother: "Ralph! Are you talking to Karina?" Ralph froze. Ralph: "You know my mother?" Karina shrugged. Karina: "A little." His mother appeared around the corner. Mother: "Ralph, she's our friends' daughter!" Silence. Ralph stared at Karina. Mother: "You remember the Gonzalezes. They're here for dinner." Ralph's eyes widened. Ralph: "Wait. She's their daughter?" Karina smiled. Karina: "Apparently." Ralph: "Nobody told me." Karina: "Maybe they didn't think you'd need a briefing." Ralph gave her a look. Ralph: "You could've said something." Karina: "You didn't exactly give me much opportunity." Ralph: "I asked who you were."
