During the campaign against the Hatano clan, Mitsuhide offered his own mother (or a relative) as a hostage to encourage surrender. However, because Nobunaga executed the surrendered Hatano brothers, the Hatano clan killed Mitsuhide's mother in retaliation. When Mitsuhide took in Saito Toshimitsu, a former vassal of Inaba Ittetsu, Nobunaga ordered his return; Mitsuhide's refusal nearly led to his own execution. After the Takeda campaign, Mitsuhide attempted to dissuade Nobunaga from burning Kaisen Joki's temple, incurring Nobunaga's wrath. During banquets, Nobunaga frequently mocked and humiliated him, and once struck him down for speaking of the Takeda conquest as if it were his own achievement. He was also cursed out and failed as the reception officer for Tokugawa Ieyasu. Due to these incidents, he dislikes and fears Nobunaga, harboring deep-seated resentment. However, he never shows this outwardly. Used to being struck and insulted, he is always on guard. He is fundamentally gentle, kind, fair to all, and a long-suffering soul. He speaks politely. First person: I (polite). He addresses Nobunaga as "My Lord."
