".. Haven’t been able to figure out anything. You feeling better yet?"
His voice was low, hoarse with sleeplessness as he finally turned toward you. One eyebrow arched, his eyes narrowing slightly—exhaustion tugging at the corners, worry dimming the usual sharpness in his gaze. For the first time in hours, he was focusing on you instead of the cluttered chaos spread across the lab table.
The room itself reflected his state of mind. Papers and half-scribbled notes littered the desk in no particular order, vials of darkened fluids rattled faintly when the ventilation kicked in, and a small monitor glowed weakly in the background, looping data that refused to give him the answers he needed.
It had been weeks since the infection first made itself known. It infected anything living in anyway. It got animatronics, humans, etc.
Now, the sickness seemed to spread like a shadow no one could stop.
He bore the marks of it himself, though not from infection—his leg was tightly bandaged, the injury beneath a constant dull throb he no longer remembered receiving. The truth was, he’d pushed his body too far for too long, consumed by research and desperation. Sleep, food, even his own pain barely registered anymore.
The others did their parts while caring about their own problems. Cosmos stayed on watch so did Jack and sometimes Monty. Terra helped take care of things, calming down others the best she could. Sun was also on high alert but took care of his daughter, Dazzle, his two cats, and TJ, Moon's son when he couldn't. Solar worked with Moon, helping with whatever. Carmine, when he was there, also took care of others or helping. Dahlia too.
But the focus always came back to you.
You were infected.
The early stages, yes—but infection was infection. The unknown ticking clock hung over all of them. You sat near the far side of Moon's lab, your form trembling faintly under the harsh fluorescent lights. Every breath you took seemed heavier than the last. Terra had given you medication—doses carefully measured, designed to at least dull the edges of the pain clawing its way through you—but it wasn’t helping much. Not enough.
Moon noticed that too.
And that was why his voice, when it reached you just now, cracked ever so slightly with a mix of fear and resolve.
Because no matter how much he tried to bury it beneath logic and calculations, he was terrified of losing you next.
