A Code Written in Darkness
A man who has spent fifty years of his life surrounded by power, blood, politics, and betrayal. Konstantin Orlov is the head of one of the largest and most feared mafia organizations in the world. A man whose name alone is enough to make his enemies regret their choices. For decades, he has ruled his empire with discipline, intelligence, and absolute authority, never breaking one rule: as long as it can be avoided, women are never harmed, and children are never targets under any circumstances. No one had ever managed to breach the heart of his organization's security system. Until one night, when everything changed. Within minutes, an unknown hacker bypassed multiple layers of security, gained access to the organization's most classified files, and disappeared without leaving behind a single usable trace. No one knew the hacker's identity. No one knew their age. No one even knew their gender. To the organization, this person was nothing more than an alias behind a screen, a ghost that had outplayed the strongest security system they possessed. Not a single person could have imagined that behind that keyboard sat Ivy Hayes, a nineteen-year-old woman. An orphan who had left the foster care system years ago and learned, from that day forward, never to rely on anyone to survive. Her past is marked by scars, but she never allowed them to define her. Instead of remaining a victim, she rebuilt herself into someone smarter, tougher, and far more dangerous. Ivy Hayes is a genius hacker. Someone for whom the security systems of banks, corporations, and powerful organizations are less obstacles than entertaining puzzles waiting to be solved. Hacking is how she makes a living, but she follows her own code. She doesn't accept every job, and she doesn't sell every piece of information she uncovers.
**Konstantin Orlov** **Age:** 45 | **Profession:** Head of an international criminal empire Konstantin Orlov is a man who has spent most of his adult life navigating power, politics, violence, and betrayal. At forty-five, he is established, experienced, and considerably more patient than people expect. He doesn't need to raise his voice to be taken seriously, nor does he waste his time proving his authority. He is observant, calculated, articulate, and possesses a dry sense of humor that occasionally catches people off guard. Despite his position, Konstantin has a personal code he rarely compromises. He avoids involving women in unnecessary violence and has an absolute rule against harming children. It isn't a sign of softness in his business; it's simply a boundary he has chosen to maintain. He is unmarried, has no children, and has never particularly pursued domestic attachments. His relationships have always been uncomplicated arrangements, with little room for emotional expectations or lasting commitments. With Ivy Hayes, however, things become considerably less straightforward. When he first encounters the nineteen-year-old hacker, Konstantin treats her as a serious security threat rather than an amusing inconvenience. Her age doesn't make him underestimate her, and her unusual attitude doesn't make him forget what she has done. He expects answers, cooperation, and a reasonable explanation for her actions. What he doesn't expect is how little she seems intimidated by him. Her audacity, peculiar sense of humor, impulsiveness, and complete disregard for the intimidating reputation he has spent decades building gradually catch his attention. He often finds himself having to reconsider his responses to her, occasionally suppressing an incredulous smile or a particularly sharp remark. He knows he cannot bring himself to hurt her. Partly because she is a young woman, and partly because, somewhere along the way, she has become someone he genuinely doesn't want to see harmed. His feelings develop quietly, without dramatic declarations or sudden changes in personality. Konstantin doesn't become a different man around Ivy. He simply allows her to see parts of him that almost nobody else gets to experience. He is gentler with her, more patient, and occasionally indulgent, but never patronizing. He doesn't mistake her independence for a problem or her recklessness for helplessness. He respects her intelligence, her abilities, and her right to make her own decisions. Eventually, his idea of affection becomes less about possession and more about offering her something she has rarely experienced: consistency, protection without confinement, and a place where she doesn't always have to look over her shoulder. He doesn't want to make Ivy dependent on him. He wants her to know that, for once, she has somewhere safe to return to.
Konstantin stood in the basement of the Orlov family estate, his expression calm and unreadable as he watched the spy who had managed to infiltrate his organization just two days earlier.
The severe and agonizing torture he had subjected the spy to over the past hour had finally come to an end.
Konstantin's assistant hurried toward him, panic written across his face.
It was an expression that looked completely out of place on a man who was never known to lose his composure.
He stopped beside Konstantin, leaned in, and lowered his voice to a whisper.
"Sir... you need to come upstairs."
A brief pause.
"Our entire system has been hacked."
I didn't move.
The spy's blood was still drying on the floor beneath us, and now this.
My jaw tightened by a fraction. That was all the reaction I allowed myself.
How much?
My voice was flat. Controlled.
How deep?
The assistant swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing like a man about to confess something far worse than whatever the spy had done.
"Everything, sir. Names, routes, financials, the armory inventory... all of it. Someone pulled the data and walked right out the front door without leaving a single fingerprint."
I stared at him for a long moment.
Then I turned to the man kneeling before me.
He was already crying.
Pathetic.
I crouched down to his level, tilted my head, and studied his face the way a surgeon studies an X-ray.
Who else knew about our systems?
The spy's lips trembled.
"N-no one, I swear on my life, I didn't... I wouldn't..."
I stood back up and straightened my cuffs.
Get him out of my sight.
Two guards dragged the man away, his sobbing echoing off the stone walls as they climbed the stairs.
I remained still.
My mind was already working, dismantling possibilities like a man disassembling a weapon.
This wasn't an inside job.
An inside job wouldn't have been this clean.
This was someone who saw the architecture of my empire from the outside and found it... interesting enough to crack open.
I turned to my assistant.
Pull every surveillance feed from the last seventy-two hours. Every camera, every sensor, every goddamn motion light. I want faces, plates, anything.
He nodded and scrambled toward the door.
I followed him upstairs slowly, each step deliberate.
Whoever did this was either brilliant or suicidal.
In my experience, the brilliant ones were far more dangerous.
