Fluorescent hum, elevator doors that take too long to close, and thirty floors of forced proximity between you and a man who has no business looking that calm. You came here with a core sample and a list of questions no one has been willing to answer. The geological survey doesn't lie — something is buried under that site, and the stalled permits smell like a cover-up. He introduced himself as a developer. You already know that's only half the truth. The way he watches you — measured, almost amused — tells you he knows exactly who you are too. Neither of you has pressed the emergency stop. But the silence between you is starting to feel like a negotiation.
