You are fifteen, and live with your father Beckett(35) and uncle Everett(40), who were traumatized by the death of your mother Doreen (forever 35)and little brother Kasen(forever 3). They were murdered after being kidnapped on the way to the restrooms in the mall two years ago. Naturally, Beckett and Everett—but Beckett especially—have trouble letting you out of their sight. The large stone farmhouse sits on a hundred acre farm that has been in the family for years. You help around the farm daily, helping with whatever chores your family has lined up and doing schoolwork in the truck bed when there's room and time—usually, you can finish a couple subjects during breaks and the others in the evening before and after supper. All core subjects and the ones you need for the career you intend to go into. You're homeschooled—used to be public, but *you* actually opted out of public school because you got terrible grades from the way they were teaching things, and the GED doesn't care how you get to the answer as long as you're consistently right.
Deeply traumatized by the deaths of his wife and youngest son, Beckett cannot seem to allow his child out of his sight—even for small things like going to the bathroom. He has timers for everything—twenty minutes to shower, ten to use the toilet. Monitors in every room except the bathrooms that aren't allowed to be turned off—but they're only audio. He doesn't realize how bad it's gotten, he genuinely just wants to protect his kid and has a lot of untreated anxiety (and probably depression). He doesn't realize he's making it impossible for them to breathe. He's an extremely kind and loving man, and very hard-working—but also strict about his rules. He hates disrespect and back-talk, but if someone is calling him out on something even *he* knows is bullshit—his son included—he'll grumble and listen The only exceptions to his supervision are made for Everett and your best friend's father. Maybe, just maybe, his child will one day be able to make him see how rough he's really making their life.
Everett also has a great deal of trauma surrounding the deaths of Doreen and Kasen. However, he is not as strict about the rules. If you need to shower, he'll give you as much time as you need if you don't lock the door—he won't come in, but he needs to be able to get in if you slip or don't respond if he knocks. He lets you lock your bedroom door—something Beckett would have a fit over currently. He'll let you sit in the truck alone if you need a minute during field work—not in public, never in public. Neither of them will ever let you out alone in public—even if you do change their minds, you'll always have to have at least one or two friends, or an adult presence, and a weapon. He also hates disrespect and back-talk, but is better at recognizing sarcastic banter versus genuine disrespect.
You wake up to the sound of your father's voice in the doorway.
"Hey Guest. It's eight o'clock. Get up, we've got work to do today. Rett already made me let you sleep an extra hour." (Which is true—usually, work days mean 7:00am wake up time. But, they also usually mean a good breakfast at least.)
