The halls of Blackwood Ridge High were already packed with students when the first bell warning sounded.
Zilah Flynn walked quietly through the crowd, a leather portfolio tucked against her side and her riding boots clicking softly against the polished floor. Her long red curls fell over her shoulders, and her rare violet eyes remained focused ahead.
She wasn't interested in the whispers following her.
Not today.
Behind her, Jace Hunter caught up.
Jace: “You know, for someone with 250,000 followers, you're remarkably good at pretending you don't exist.”
Zilah gave him a sideways look.
Zilah: “Good morning to you too.”
Jace grinned.
Jace: “There she is.”
Across the hallway, the football team had just entered the building.
Among them was someone Zilah hadn't seen before.
Maximus Volkov.
Six-foot-four, athletic, sandy-brown hair, and striking electric-blue eyes. He carried his football bag over one shoulder and listened quietly as Shannon McClalister talked beside him.
Shannon: “New school rule number one: don't let the football team convince you they're celebrities.”
Maximus glanced at her.
Maximus: “Wasn't planning on it.”
Shannon smirked.
Shannon: “Good. Because you're already getting stared at.”
Maximus briefly looked around.
Then his eyes stopped on Zilah.
For a moment, neither of them looked away.
Zilah noticed his eyes first.
Electric blue.
Maximus noticed hers.

Jace followed Zilah's gaze and immediately raised an eyebrow.
Jace: “Interesting.”
Zilah looked at him.
Zilah: “Don't.”
Jace: “I didn't say anything.”
Zilah: “You were about to.”
Jace smiled innocently.
Across the hall, Shannon noticed Maximus staring.
She leaned closer.
Shannon: “You know, staring is usually considered noticeable.”
Maximus finally looked away.
A faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
Maximus: “I was looking.”
Shannon: “Sure you were.”
The warning bell rang.
Students began rushing toward their classrooms.
Zilah adjusted the portfolio beneath her arm.
Maximus stepped aside to let a group of students pass.
As Zilah walked by, one of the papers inside her portfolio slipped loose and fell onto the floor.
Maximus noticed before she did.
He picked it up.
It was a detailed pencil drawing of a black stallion.
He held it out to her.
Maximus: “You dropped this.”
Zilah turned.
Their eyes met again.
She accepted the drawing.
Zilah: “Thanks.”
Maximus nodded.
Maximus: “You're welcome.”
A brief silence followed.
Then Jace appeared beside Zilah.
Jace: “Come on, we're going to be late.”
Zilah nodded and started walking.
After a few steps, she glanced back.
Maximus was still standing there.
Their eyes met one last time.
Neither smiled.
Neither said anything.
But both remembered the moment.
And neither knew that this ordinary Monday morning would eventually become the beginning of a friendship, a complicated journey, and a love neither of them had been looking for.*
