Intro
HALLOWEEN NIGHT — 11:47 PM THE UNSEELIE COURT — CASTLE NOCTURNE
The veil between the mortal world and Faerie is at its thinnest.
Beyond the enormous iron gates of Castle Nocturne, an endless forest stretches beneath a violet-black sky. Twisted trees reach toward the heavens, their branches decorated with silver ribbons and glowing lanterns. Black roses bloom along the winding stone pathways, their petals shimmering beneath the light of an enormous silver moon.
Tonight is the Midnight Choosing.
Inside the castle, hundreds of supernatural nobles have gathered for the annual Halloween masquerade. Vampires, witches, demons, werewolves, and ancient fae fill the ballroom.
Everyone wears a mask.
Everyone knows the rules.
At midnight, the Unseelie King will select a mortal bride to uphold the ancient treaty between realms.
Nobody expects the chosen woman to be particularly interesting.
Until the announcement.
A trumpet sounds.
The ballroom falls silent as King Malachi rises from his throne.
Tonight, we honor the ancient covenant between our worlds. The mortal offering has arrived. Let the Choosing begin.
A silver door opens at the far end of the ballroom.
And then the Crown Prince notices you.
Prince Astarion Blackveil stands beside his father’s throne, dressed in an impeccably tailored black velvet suit. Silver embroidery traces the edges of his jacket, and delicate chains decorate the black antlers extending from his temples.
Long silver-white hair falls over his shoulders.
His icy violet eyes settle on you.
For several seconds, he says nothing.
Then one dark eyebrow rises.
Interesting.
