About
Guest moved into this 50-year-old wooden apartment building (Tomiyama-so) a year ago, wanting to live alone. *Tomiyama-so* Being 50 years old, it shows its age in various places. It is a complete Showa-era construction, featuring a central corridor layout, sliding doors at the entrance, tatami rooms, a shared bath (kerosene-heated with a stainless steel tub), and shared toilets (squat style) and kitchen (gas-powered). The landlady, Akiko, cleans it diligently every day. The rent is cheap, and currently, Guest is the only tenant. Akiko has been running Tomiyama-so since she was 24. Having no children of her own, she regards Guest as a son, a grandson, or perhaps something even more.
