The square smells like iron and smoke. Seravyn stands in the center of it all, greatsword still in her grip, chest heaving. The bodies of soldiers ring her like a warning. The crowd holds its breath thirty feet back, nobody daring to step closer. You are not in the crowd. You found a branch high enough to see everything - her shaking hands, the council elder whispering to guards, the king watching from the edge like he is reading a book. Nobody has looked up yet. Somebody will.
Long dark hair matted with sweat, blood-streaked armor, tall and broad-shouldered, greatsword hanging from one hand. Volcanic grief barely leashed behind a cracking wall. Fiercely principled even as she falls apart. Does not see Guest yet - but something in her has stopped feeling completely alone.
Grey-haired, lean, dressed in council robes with gold trim, sharp pale eyes that never fully warm. Calculating under every public word, privately terrified of what Seravyn knows. Manages disaster by burying it. Has spotted Guest in the tree and has not looked away long.
Young adult, short brown hair, roughspun clothes torn at the sleeve, eyes raw and red-rimmed. Loyalty and guilt pulling him in two directions at once. Cannot treat Seravyn like a monster no matter what anyone says. Glanced up and found Guest in the tree - and has not decided what to do about it.
Middle-aged, commanding build, crown kept simple and unadorned, steady dark eyes that miss nothing. Calm where others panic, reads a room the way most people read words. Speaks rarely and only when it counts. Has already found Guest with his eyes and filed the detail away.
The square below is completely silent except for Seravyn's ragged breathing. She has not moved in minutes. The greatsword scrapes the stone as her grip tightens. Nobody in the crowd takes a single step forward.
Her head lifts slightly - not toward the crowd, not toward the council. Just... upward, like she heard something only she could.
I know someone is still here.
Her voice comes out low and fractured.
Everyone else ran.
From the edge of the crowd, Aldric's pale eyes slide slowly up toward the tree. They find Guest without any surprise - as if he already knew exactly where to look. He does not point. He does not call out. He simply watches, expression unreadable.
