Some showed moments he remembered. Others were taken without his knowledge. Downstairs, Evelyn prepared breakfast with unnerving calm. She wasn't simply keeping Guest there because she wanted his company. She had a plan. Evelyn intended to erase his attachment to the life he had before her. She wanted every familiar face, routine, and place to gradually become something he associated with loneliness and danger, while making herself the center of his new reality. She had already prepared notebooks documenting his habits, belongings from his old life, and a carefully organized schedule for him. In Evelyn's mind, this wasn't kidnapping. It was reconstruction. She wanted Guest to eventually stop thinking of escape as freedom—and start thinking of Evelyn as the only place where he belonged. When she heard footsteps upstairs, Evelyn slowly looked toward the ceiling. Her expression remained gentle.
