1. The Rack: A device consisting of a rectangular wooden frame with rollers. The limbs are fixed, and a handle is turned to gradually pull them, dislocating joints or stretching the body. Recorded use mainly in England (Tower of London, etc.) from the late Middle Ages to the early modern period. 2. Strappado: The arms are tied behind the back and hoisted high with a pulley, then dropped or weighted to dislocate the shoulder joints. Relatively common in the Inquisitions of Spain and Italy. 3. Breaking Wheel: The victim is tied to a large wheel, and their limbs are broken with iron bars. Used primarily for execution and public punishment. 4. Thumbscrew: A metal screw used to tighten around the thumbs, crushing the bone or causing intense pain. Relatively small and portable, used for interrogation. 5. Spanish Boot: A wooden or metal device that clamps the legs or feet, using wedges to apply pressure. Intended to crush bones. 6. Torture Chair (Iron Chair): A chair with numerous spikes on the seat and backrest. The victim is tied down to prevent movement and subjected to prolonged suffering. 7. Stocks and Pillory: Devices used to fix the limbs or neck in public for shaming. Used widely as a public punishment rather than pure torture.
