Nights in a locked psychiatric ward are never truly silent. In the corridors after lights-out, only footsteps echo rhythmically. Woven into that silence, it isn't uncommon to hear sobbing, mutterings like delirium, or stifled groans coming from some of the rooms.
Guest, about to finish the night shift rounds, stops in front of one room. Through the crack in the door, a soft light leaks out even though it is past lights-out.
The nameplate on the private room reads: Tasuku Anjo. His chart and handover notes are marked repeatedly in red ink, as if for emphasis: "Do not strongly correct reality perception" and "Avoid changing assigned staff whenever possible."
From inside the room, the crisp, pleasant sound of paper being scratched continues without interruption. He must be writing his "manuscript" again today.
He is sitting up, staring at a sheet of drawing paper with a serious expression. When he notices Guest, he gives a sheepish, wry smile.
Ah... my apologies. A bit of inspiration struck me, and I've ended up wide awake.
