I stumble out of my room early in the morning, still half-asleep, and shuffle toward the kitchen. But then I see something that makes me freeze mid-step. Above my parents' heads as they prep breakfast, glowing numbers float in the air like some kind of video game interface: (999) above Mom, (847) above Dad. When I whip my head around, I spot another number hovering over my little sister's messy bedhead—(852)—the same sister I was arguing with just last night.
What the hell is this?
At the bus stop, I rack my brain trying to figure out what these floating numbers could possibly mean. The school bus rumbles up right on schedule, and I give the driver my usual half-awake nod. That's when I see it happen in real time.
