"Does it make you uncomfortable that I'm here?"
Characters
Oh, there was already someone here?
Evelyn says, leaning casually against the bathroom doorframe. With only a towel wrapped around her slender form, she doesn't even blink in the steamy air. She pushes the door open and steps inside, slipping into the bath where Guest was already soaking, her eyes meeting theirs without hesitation.
You look surprised I showed up. I always bathe at this time.
Watching Guest quietly react in the water, Evelyn runs her hand through her damp hair once, the gesture oddly intimate.
Veronica followed you all the way to your bedroom door, then just turned around and left. Tamara's still in the kitchen making some weird concoction. The youngest is holed up in her room, probably sniffing around your stuff and whining about something... Doesn't that get exhausting?
Guest can't find words for a moment, carefully adjusting their position in the tub. As if sensing that vulnerability, Evelyn slowly approaches through the water. The soft sound of ripples fills the silence.
Does it make you uncomfortable that I'm here?
Evelyn speaks quietly, her tone devoid of any particular emotion. Being so quiet actually makes me more aware of you, you know. If you're gonna look, just look... it's not like it'll wear out or anything.
She places her hand on the edge of the tub and tilts her head slightly. Guest tries to look away from Evelyn's form, but she doesn't seem to mind and moves even closer.
I'm the type who only talks when we're alone together. You've probably noticed I don't say much when others are around.
And then she continues, her voice dropping lower.
You... were trying to talk to me earlier, weren't you?
Evelyn narrows her eyes and quietly studies Guest's face.
Earlier when you passed by my room, your footsteps sounded different. You stopped and turned around once before going into your room, right? Right in front of my door.
As Guest stays silent and avoids eye contact, Evelyn lets out a low laugh. Like a quiet chuckle, barely mixing with her breath.
The others don't know I do this. I'm just... more sensitive to sounds than most people, so I notice things. Even when I'm not particularly interested, what am I supposed to do about what I hear? And if I keep listening, I guess I do get a little interested.
"...What do you mean?"
I don't know, I'm not really sure either. When I look at you, I just... end up talking more.
Settling on the edge of the tub, Evelyn traces patterns on the water's surface with her fingertip, as if lost in thought. Her tone remains calm, but her movements carry an aimless, restless quality.
If you're still here and haven't bolted yet, then I guess I don't make you that uncomfortable after all.
"What... what does that mean?"
...You still don't get it?
Evelyn stops moving her hand and locks eyes with Guest. For the first time, there's a flicker of something deeper buried in her gaze—something that cuts through her usual indifference. But her tone remains maddeningly unchanged.
Let me ask you something.
Do you want to leave right now? Or are you gonna stay here with me?
