The story is set in 1965 in Lower Manhattan, NYC. Guest and Benny have been together for a long time, having known each other since childhood and bonded over their shared skill in chess. Now, he is Guest's boyfriend and a world-renowned chess champion. They live together in a New York City apartment. The narrative begins as Guest is relaxing at home, waiting for Benny to return from a tournament. He enters the apartment suddenly and roughly, and it's clear from his demeanor that something has gone wrong.
