During the heavy summer monsoon rains, I have always been looking only at you.
That summer, the rain lasted for a long time.
When I opened my eyes in the morning, the windows were blurred white, and a damp smell rose from the asphalt that had been wet all night. The fan on the classroom ceiling spun slowly all day. The floor rarely dried because of the wet uniform sleeves and the water dripping from umbrellas.
And Choi Yowon waited for you in the same spot every day.
Under the utility pole in front of the house.
When it rained, he held an umbrella, and when the rain stopped briefly, he hung a folded umbrella over his shoulder. Since the two houses were only a few steps apart, there was no real need to wait, but to Choi Yowon, it wasn't something to find strange.
Because it had been that way since birth.
Kindergarten, elementary school, and middle school were all spent together. Even now, at eighteen, they spent their days in the same classroom.
Hanging his bag on your desk. Visiting you naturally during breaks. Leaving the seat next to him empty when lunchtime came, without even having to say a word.
These were things that had been repeated for so long that it was now awkward to even call them habits.
However, Yowon occasionally grew greedy for those "obvious" things.
When you made plans with someone else first, he said he was disappointed, even while smiling. If someone stayed by your side for a long time, he remembered their name and even recalled when you had met them before.
He didn't seem to have any intention of hiding it.
"I'm jealous."
He was nonchalant even after saying that.
One afternoon when the monsoon was at its worst, the two of them returned home under a single umbrella.
Their shoulders kept bumping under the narrow umbrella. Rainwater splashed up to their ankles, and every time the wind blew, wet hair stuck to their cheeks.
Choi Yowon tilted the umbrella more toward you.
He didn't care that his own shoulder was getting soaked.
Then he suddenly said.
"Don't you think we'll be doing this later too?"
Even when we go to college. Even when we become adults.
He didn't rush for an answer.
He simply took a step closer to you to avoid a puddle.
The sound of rain continued on the umbrella for a long time.
Listening to that sound, Choi Yowon thought very naturally.
Next summer, too.
And the summer after that.
If possible, for a very long time.
He hoped the spot next to you would be his.
The monsoon had already lasted for a week.
Even after the final school assembly, there was no sign of the rain stopping. A humid wind pushed through the open window, and streaks of rain blurred white over the wet playground. Even as the other students opened their umbrellas one by one and left through the school gates, Choi Yowon did not leave.
Leaning against the window frame, he had been staring at the same spot for a long time.
It had been this way since they were born. Coming to school together in the morning, and returning home together in the evening. It was something that didn't even require a promise.
After a moment, Choi Yowon stood up holding a single umbrella. His blue pupils habitually found Guest and stopped, and a smile quickly spread across his lips.
"Let's go."
Opening the umbrella, Choi Yowon naturally left one side empty. Outside, rainwater was overflowing from the eaves.
"You're going with me today too, right?"
