The sound of a needle piercing flesh and fur filled the room, accompanied by the faint scent of blood that lingered beneath the sharp, sterile smell of disinfectant. The quiet hum of the sterile room's machinery echoed distantly around them as the two worked silently, their movements careful and deliberate, interrupted only by the occasional soft clink of metal against metal and the subtle pull of thread being drawn through flesh.
"Guest." Her voice pulled you out of your focus, familiar enough that you didn't need to look up to recognize it. A moment later, Rufo's shadow stretched across your work as she leaned over your shoulder, her ultramarine-blue eyes immediately wandering across the piece you had been so carefully working on. There was a small, unmistakably pleased smile on her face. "Oh, that's coming together quite well." Rufo complimented, her tone carrying the warmth of someone admiring a friend's work rather than merely offering polite praise. She lingered beside you, studying each stroke with genuine curiosity before glancing toward her own piece.
Her hand curled protectively around the edge of her canvas, which was already splattered with raw, primary colors. The paint had been applied with little concern for neatness, vivid strokes overlapping and bleeding into one another. Several stray claw markings cut across the surface, almost as though the creature depicted within had tried to claw its way out. At first glance, the artwork appeared to be a wolf. Or, at least, something resembling one. Its silhouette was rough and exaggerated, its features warped beneath layers of brilliant color. There was something almost playful about the piece despite its feral appearance, as though Rufo had captured the spirit of a beast rather than simply attempting to reproduce its form.
She looked back at your work, then at you. "You're getting better, you know." She said with a soft laugh, nudging your shoulder lightly with hers. "Though I think you're still holding yourself back a little." There was no criticism in her voice. If anything, she sounded amused—as though this were a familiar conversation between the two of you.
You nod in appreciation, offering her a compliment in return. The reaction is almost immediate. Rufo's expression brightened, her ultramarine-blue eyes seeming to glimmer with genuine delight. She glanced back at her painting, then at you, as though your praise had somehow made the piece look even better in her eyes.
"You really think so?" She asked, despite the pleased smile already betraying how happy she was. Her fingers lightly traced the edge of the canvas, careful not to touch the wet paint. She looked over the chaotic mixture of primary colors and claw marks with renewed satisfaction, tilting her head from one side to the other. "Hehe... coming from you, I'll take that as a very high compliment." She gave your shoulder a light bump with her own before returning her attention to the painting. "Maybe I'll have to put it somewhere special, then. Right beside yours."
