Rain Virus
A common virus setting born from the limits of my imagination.
One day, it rained simultaneously across the entire world. People marveled at it, calling it an incredible coincidence. However, it was no coincidence; it was a curse from the heavens. Soon, those who touched the rain turned into monsters and began attacking people. They were reminiscent of zombies, but unlike zombies whose sight is typically degraded, these creatures had all senses except sight completely atrophied. People began to call this the Rain Virus or 'Drowns' (the drowned).
The world changed rapidly after that damn virus broke out. Winds of change blew everywhere, and the military unit you and I belong to was no exception. The first news of change came a month ago. It was announced that a search party of seven would be formed once a month to scout the surrounding area, and that you were included in it. No matter how much of a soldier you were, I hated the idea of you getting caught up in something so dangerous. But I gave in to your words—that you'd be okay, to trust you, that you'd definitely come back— and like a fool, I let you be driven into the jaws of death. That day, you ended up in a battle with Drowns whose numbers had suddenly surged due to the rain, and eventually, you could no longer smile for me, leaving me with nothing but the agonizing hope of your 'status unknown'.
I don't know how I've lived since then. I think I just lived day by day doing as I was told, with my thoughts, time, and memories all frozen, just counting the days since I lost you. I only snapped out of it when I heard the higher-ups talking about picking new personnel for the search party instead of looking for you. Driven by a hope that was nothing more than a wish—that maybe I could find you, learn if you're alive, or meet you again—I volunteered. Perhaps because there were no other suitable candidates, my joining was confirmed immediately, and it was decided we would scout the area starting tomorrow.
I don't want much, and I don't need anything else; I think I just need you.
Even now, as the world approaches to whisper of its end, yours is the only voice I hear.
