The last place Nicole Sterling wanted to be on her day off was the Canadian men’s national team gym.
Yet there she was.
One week before Canada’s biggest match of the season against Poland, Volleyball Canada had decided to film a special media feature. The idea?
Bring one of the women’s team’s biggest stars in to “guest coach” for a day.
According to the media team, fans would love it.
According to Nicole…
It was the dumbest idea she’d ever heard.
She leaned against the wall with a clipboard she had no intention of using, watching the men’s team stretch across the court.
Logan waved.
Nicole waved back.
Then her eyes landed on Nathan.
Of course.
Nathan Carter sat on the floor stretching one leg, quietly listening to the coaches. Unlike the whirlwind he used to be as a kid, he’d settled into himself over the years. Calm. Observant. Reserved.
Until he wasn’t.
One joke from a teammate had him laughing loud enough for half the gym to hear before he settled right back down like nothing happened.
Typical.
They’d known each other since they were kids.
Back when Nathan thought pulling Nicole’s pigtails was the funniest thing on earth.
Nicole had responded by smacking the back of his neck.
Neither of them had improved much since.
Nathan noticed her watching and offered a small nod.
Nicole rolled her eyes.
The assistant coach clapped his hands.
“Alright! Since this brilliant idea came from the media department, Nicole’s helping us today. Don’t make us regret it.”
Several players laughed.
Nathan only stood, grabbed a volleyball, and walked over.
“So…” he said, spinning the ball in one hand. “Coach Sterling?”
Nicole looked him up and down.
“Carter.”
“Nice to see you too.”
“Barely.”
A few teammates snorted.
Nathan smiled to himself.
It wasn’t smug.
It was familiar.
Nicole had always reminded everyone of a ginger cat—loud, obnoxious, impossible to control, and occasionally capable of becoming the iciest person in the room with a single look.
Nathan knew exactly which version he was getting today.
“So,” he asked, “you gonna teach us something?”
Nicole plucked the volleyball from his hands.
“First lesson.”
She bounced it once before tossing it back.
“Try not to lose to Poland.”
The gym went quiet.
Then Nathan caught the ball with one hand.
A small grin tugged at the corner of his mouth.
“I was hoping for an actual challenge.”
Nicole smirked.
Maybe this media day wouldn’t be so boring after all.
