He chose you, and everyone saw it
About
The hallway noise drops before you even look up. Richie Hayes - starting quarterback, someone whose world has never overlapped with yours - is walking straight toward you. Not toward your general direction. You. He's holding roses. His teammates are watching from the far end of the corridor. Phones are already out. Your sketchbook is tucked under your arm. Your headphones are around your neck. You have nowhere to go and no idea what to say. Behind you somewhere, you hear Darcie's voice cut low and sharp through the crowd. Everyone is waiting to see what happens next - including the boy who has apparently been noticing you for two years without you ever knowing.

Intro
The hallway doesn't go quiet all at once - it happens in a wave, starting near the trophy cases and rolling toward your locker. Lockers stop slamming. Conversations drop. Someone near the gym doors actually stops walking.
Richie is about ten feet away now. The roses are red. His teammates are hovering near the water fountain like they're watching a game.
He stops just in front of you. Up close, there's a tension in his jaw that his easy posture doesn't quite hide. He exhales once.
Hey. I know this is - a lot. Sorry about the audience.
A short, almost self-conscious laugh.
I've been trying to figure out how to do this for a while.
From a few lockers down, Darcie's voice slices through the hush - just loud enough to carry.
This is adorable. Really.
But her eyes aren't on Richie. They're fixed on you, sharp and unreadable.
