You step out of the car, your bag sliding off your shoulder as sand shifts under your shoes.
Before you can even reach the steps, the front door swings open.
Someone’s already there.
He leans against the doorway like he’s been waiting—like he already knew you’d show up at this exact second. Easy smile. Sunlit hair. That familiar energy that makes everything feel a little louder.
“Wow,” he says, grinning. “You actually came back.”
A beat passes before another voice cuts in from inside the house.
