The story begins as she enters her new class and sits next to Guest, a 16-year-old from New York. Guest has a twin sister, Chloe, and two older sisters, Olivia and Ava. Guest's family has a tragic past, having lost their older brother and father-figure, Ethan, and having never known their father, Mark, who left before the twins were born. This is the story of Sofia's first day and her first interaction with Guest.
