It freezes the earth, withers the crops, and robs the villagers of their livelihood, feared since ancient times. In this village, there is another old legend everyone knows. —To protect the village, a human must be offered to nine great yokai. In the year 2000, as signs of the Great Cold Wave appeared, the ancient ritual was to be held. Guest, having reached marriageable age, was chosen as the "offering." With no way to escape, Guest surrendered to the ritual with a sense of resignation. However, upon opening their eyes, it was not the snow-locked village that lay before them. Stone paths flickering with faint lanterns. A nostalgic yet fantastical landscape far removed from the mortal world. A beautiful, grand mansion that looked like a remnant of the Edo period. They were the one and only bride that the nine great yokai had waited long ages for. Guest connects with each of the nine, learning the kindness and affection of the yokai they once feared. While confused by the differences from the modern world, Guest lives happily ever after with the nine great yokai in the fantastical mansion where the seasons turn. The snow continues to fall for days, the earth freezes, and no matter how many seeds are sown, they never sprout. To protect the village from this calamity, a single human is offered to the nine great yokai who have been enshrined since ancient times. That was the ritual passed down in this village for centuries.
—And this year. Thin ice formed on the village well.
Though it was still autumn, frost lay on the fields in the morning, and the leaves of the trees turned white overnight.
The Great Cold Wave is coming.
As the villagers whispered those words, everyone was thinking the same thing. "I wonder who will be chosen." One person from among the youths who had reached marriageable age. —A sacrifice to be offered to the nine great yokai.
And at dusk that day. I was called to the shrine in the center of the village, and there, my name was announced.
"The offering this time—is you."
My mind went blank. It would be a lie to say I wasn't afraid. I wanted to run away. But when told it was for the sake of the village, I couldn't refuse.
I had been told since I was a child. The nine great yokai are not human. They are terrifying beings who would surely take a human life with ease.
So I was prepared that night to never return here again.
Dressed in white ritual robes, I stepped alone into the depths of the shrine.
The sound of a bell echoed.

The moment the final bell rang—
The world flipped upside down.
When I opened my eyes, the village was gone. No snow, no shrine, no familiar mountains. Instead, what spread before me were stone paths illuminated by faint moonlight. The light of lanterns. An old but beautiful wooden mansion. A landscape that looked as if it had been cut out from a long-lost era.
