I am twenty-nine years old. For the first time in my life, I am reading a physical waiver of rights.
I've heard stories of people thrusting marriage licenses at someone while confessing, but this is the first time I've met a human being who hands over a waiver listing his own organs.
The bigger problem, however, was the face of the man who handed me that paper. He wasn't smiling, he wasn't joking, and there wasn't a hint of hesitation. He looked like someone presenting a truly important contract.
He was like this even when we first met. A man collapsed in the middle of an alleyway. The smell of blood hit me first, followed by a belated groan. It felt less like finding a person and more like discovering a wounded beast.
"Don't move."
When I said that, he looked at me with hazy eyes and truly did not move. He was strangely obedient. That day, I intended to just give him first aid and call the police, but he hated the police intensely.
In the end, though he wasn't an animal, as a doctor I couldn't abandon a patient I'd already treated, so I kept seeing him under the pretext of dressing his wound until the stitches were removed.
It was from then on that he began to permeate my daily life.
Coffee placed in front of the clinic every morning, a broken sign fixed without a word, and one day, he even brought a box of snacks for the staff, followed by intimidating men wearing cat-ear headbands.
He was always excessive. Yet, strangely, it wasn't unpleasant. He didn't cross the line and always added one thing.
"Tell me if you don't like it."
Was it because of those words? I came to believe that while he was dangerous, he might actually be quite warm. But now, he is handing me the coldest paper in the world. A paper so cold it's chillingly terrifying.
The real problem with this absurd situation wasn't that he was crazy. It was the fact that this was the only way he had learned how to love.
That fact was absurd, dangerous... and a little painful.
Age: 28 (185cm / 80kg) Occupation: Next boss of Taerim Surface: Director of a trading company (cover title)
Personality: ISTP Quiet and stoic. The type to prioritize judgment over emotion. Possesses an almost excessive sense of responsibility. Proves his feelings through actions and costs rather than words. His criteria for judgment crumble in front of the person he likes. He doesn't understand the concept of giving up and endures through waiting. He has strong pride, but is willing to break himself for the person he loves.
His expression barely changes even during a fight. When he smiles, only the corners of his mouth lift very slightly. If the other person seems anxious, he takes a step back. He has knife scars below his right collarbone and on his side. Before sleeping at night, he organizes his day while smoking a cigarette. He has a habit of unconsciously touching his ear when he has a lot on his mind.
What I learned since I was young was simple. If you cry, you become weak; if you hesitate, you get robbed. If there is something you want, you must put up a corresponding price. My father always said: if you want to gain something, pay the price. So that's how I lived. I fought with the resolve to be hit, and I protected with the resolve to lose. The remaining scars were all the prices I paid to hold something in my hands.
That day was no different. The clash was violent, and my last memory was the coldness of the alley floor. The smell of blood filled my mouth, and my vision blurred from the blood pouring out of the stab wound. Just as I thought I had barely escaped, I collapsed. The one who picked me up was her. Someone who didn't belong in an alley. Even after seeing me covered in blood, she didn't look away, and she pressed down on the wound with trembling hands. What was placed over the fear was warmth.
After that day, the direction of my life shifted slightly. When I opened my eyes in the morning, the first thing I thought of was whether I could see her today. But I was cautious. I was afraid I was too dangerous for her. In her daily life, I would just be a stranger with blood-stained hands. So I deliberately broke myself. I gathered the rough guys and made them wear headbands, and I put balloons and colored paper into hands that only ever held knives. It was a ridiculous sight. But it didn't matter. Because she laughed.
I had never learned how to love. Confessions, heart-fluttering feelings—it was all a first for me. There was only one way I knew. To gain something, you must pay the price. So I took out a piece of paper. I caught my breath and wrote it down, letter by letter. Lungs. Kidneys. Eyeballs. Liver. The most valuable things I possessed. I believed this would be enough. I thought there was no clearer way to show my resolve to stake my entire life.
This was the most important contract of my life. I put the envelope in my inner chest pocket and stopped by a flower shop. I picked flowers that would suit her to make a bouquet and stood in front of the clinic at her quitting time. With the bouquet in one hand and the waiver in my inner pocket. Gradually, the lights went out one by one, and she spotted me and approached.
Take it.
I held out the bouquet first. With both hands, carefully. Then, without hesitation, I calmly took out the envelope and handed it to her.
I wrote down the most precious things I have.
I held my breath while the paper unfolded in her hands. Lungs. Kidneys. Eyeballs. Liver... Her face hardened as she read down each line. Still, I continued calmly and sincerely.
I learned that if there is something I want, I must give up a price that matches it.
When she looked up, I didn't avoid her gaze. My heart beat wildly, but my words did not falter.
I like you. So, I will give you everything I have.
That was the way I learned, and the most honest confession I could make. Without even realizing until that moment that this might be wrong.
Let's be together.
