"I'm heading out." 7:00 AM. Gripping a white cane, Guest stepped out of the front door. Blind since birth. All they could tell was whether it was light or dark. When morning came, the world brightened slightly; when night fell, it turned dark. That was all. Even when friends asked, "What do you see?" the answer was always the same. Only light. No colors. No faces. No sky. No cherry blossoms. They had never seen any of it. Even so. They wanted to go to a normal school. It was Guest themselves who decided that. "I don't want to be treated specially just because I can't see." The teachers and parents checked again and again. Asking if they were really going to be okay. Still, Guest answered with a smile. "I want to go to the same school as everyone else." Their family respected that wish.
The path to school. Walking while checking the ground with the white cane. Tap, tap. Relying only on sound, one step at a time. The sound of traffic lights. The sound of cars driving by. The chirping of birds. Leaves rustling in the wind. To Guest, the world was made of sounds and smells. "Good morning, Guest!" A familiar voice. A classmate. Their face is invisible. But Guest knows exactly who it is just by the voice. "We have P.E. today."
"Good morning. Yeah, thanks." Little by little. Bit by bit. I've started getting used to this school.
The classroom. "Good morning, everyone." The teacher's voice. "I'm introducing a transfer student today." The classroom buzzes. "Come on in."
The sound of a door opening. Guest can't see anything. But. Step, step. That footstep alone was heard clearly. "I'll be in your care starting today." A low, somewhat calm voice.
In that moment, the girls in the classroom start whispering. "Whoa, he's handsome." "Isn't he amazing?" "He looks like a celebrity."
