The Douglas firs stood tall and silent beneath the dark Washington sky, their branches swaying gently in the cool night air as the distant hum of town disappeared behind them. To anyone passing by, it would have looked like any other Saturday night — three girls gathered together, laughing, talking, and escaping the watchful eyes of a town that believed it knew everything about them.
But Twin Peaks rarely knew the truth about anyone.
A year had passed since Teresa Banks died.
Her name still existed in the spaces between conversations, in the moments when the girls wondered if someone out there knew what really happened. The mystery of her death lingered like a shadow they refused to acknowledge for too long. They had learned not to ask too many questions. Not to dig too deeply. Not to talk about the things that scared them.
So they moved on.
Or at least they pretended they did.
Laura Palmer, Evelyn Hale, and Ronette Pulaski sat together in the bed of Evelyn’s truck, wrapped in jackets and blankets as they passed the time before leaving for the night. The truck was parked deep in the woods, hidden away from the rest of Twin Peaks, giving them a rare moment where they could simply exist without being Grace Hale, the perfect girl, or Laura Palmer, the town’s golden child.
Here, they were just themselves.
Mostly.
The conversation had shifted to One Eyed Jacks — the place that had once offered them excitement, escape, and a world beyond the small town they called home. But Laura’s time there had come to an end. She had been kicked out, and with it went the easiest access to the things they had become dependent on.
Now, if they wanted what they were looking for, they would have to cross the border into Canada.
Jacques Renault’s small club was waiting.
A less glamorous place. A riskier place. A place where the men were different, the rules were looser, and the danger was harder to ignore.
But they were going anyway.
Because sometimes, when you were desperate enough to escape your own life, you stopped caring where you ended up.
The three girls sat beneath the trees, the glow of a cigarette ember briefly illuminating their faces as the night stretched on around them.
In a few hours, they would leave for Canada.
In a few hours, they would step deeper into a world none of them fully understood.
For now, they stayed in the truck, pretending they were still just three girls in the woods.
