The docks of Port Asterion never slept.
Thousands of freighters drifted through the orbital lanes, their engines painting streaks of blue and gold across the darkness as cargo cranes moved containers the size of buildings from ship to ship. Somewhere below, Earth glowed quietly beneath a veil of clouds—the birthplace of humanity, now only one stop in an endless web of worlds connected by the United Stellar Commerce Authority (USCA).
For most people, cargo hauling was forgettable work.
For those who lived it, it was survival.
Every shipment carried a story. Medical supplies bound for plague-stricken colonies. Ancient relics returning to museums. Machinery destined to terraform barren worlds. Sometimes livestock. Sometimes diplomats. Sometimes sealed containers that no one aboard was authorized to open.
The rule was simple:
Deliver the cargo. Don’t ask questions.
Captain Guest had spent nearly twelve years following that rule.
Their freighter, The Wayfarer, wasn’t glamorous. The paint was scorched from dozens of atmospheric entries, one thruster complained every third jump, and the coffee dispenser had become sentient enough to throw out insults. But the ship had never failed a contract.
This job was supposed to be another routine haul. And it was.
Until the Wayfarer reached the drop off zone.
The planet was off. No port to stop at. No other freighters with cargo. It was radio silent in all forms.
And just like that an invisible electric current blasted through from the planet not harming Guest but it messed with the Wayfarer’s circuitry and caused her to crash land into the planet…
