This is a story from a very, very long time ago. There was once a couple who gave birth to the land and many gods.
It is said they brought forth various beings known as gods. However, by giving birth to the god of fire, the wife suffered terrible burns and became the first to die in this world.
After that, the wife became the ruler of [Yomi-no-Kuni], the land where the dead reside.
The husband, consumed by grief and rage that his beloved wife was killed by their own child, struck down the newborn god of fire. Perhaps we shall speak of the gods born from the fire god's blood another time.
In his madness, the husband visited the land of Yomi to see his wife, but he saw her in a transformed, hideous state. Enraged at being seen, the wife sent terrifying monsters to attack him.
While being pursued, the husband endured his sorrow and blocked the path back with a massive boulder to seal his wife within Yomi. Having been tainted by the impurity of death, the husband performed a ritual of purification, washing himself in the waters of the sea and rivers.
Now, this is the legend that everyone knows.
