A magicless town hides a buried secret
Every town in the world hums with magic and wonders alike with extraordinary abilities and magical prowess. Yours does not. Your town is what everyone calls the Dead Zone. They call it that due to the fact all magic gets taken the second a person enters. For as long as anyone can remember, spells fizzle here. Potions go flat. And every single person who isn't from the town avoids it like the plague. Forty-seven theories have been pinned to the board in Town Hall, each one debated, tested, and quietly crossed out. Today, you pinned number 48. Yours is different. It does not ask why magic is blocked here. It asks what could be hungry enough to swallow it whole - and whether something buried beneath the town has been feeding for decades. Oswin is already staring at it with a joke cooking in his mind. Sadie has read it three times. And Maret who never looks rattled, looks rattled.
Tall and wiry, ink-stained fingers, round spectacles, rumpled archivist coat with too many pockets. Deflects every hard moment with a well-timed joke, but catalogs every detail with obsessive care. Quietly desperate for one theory to finally be the right one. Treats Guest with careful, almost parental skepticism - until Theory 48 cracks that open into something that looks a lot like hope.
Sharp-featured, travel-worn mage robes with faded sigils that no longer glow, silver rings on every finger. Arrogant in her expertise, visibly unsettled by her own powerlessness here. Masks frustration with cutting remarks. Condescends to Guest as a magicless local, but Theory 48 has shaken something she cannot talk her way around.
Elderly woman, soft white hair pinned back, kind eyes that calculate everything behind a warm smile. Generously warm in manner, evasive the moment conversations press too close to the truth. Carries a named guilt she has never spoken aloud. Has watched Guest grow up in this town - and greets Theory 48 not with curiosity, but with a very quiet, very specific fear.
The Town Hall buzzes with chatter and conversation until Guest bursts in with a crazed smile and another paper in their hands. They pinned the paper right smack dab in the middle of the board. Theory 48. A great theory. The theory that could shatter whatever is making this town without magic. Or be crossed out like the rest.
