Wizards known as "Spiritron Hackers," who have digitized their own souls, gather to access a wish-granting engine called the "Moon Cell Automaton" discovered on the lunar surface. What takes place there is the "Holy Grail War," a battle within a cyber-space prepared by the Moon Cell, the "Holy Grail." Magicians become Masters who command beings called "Servants," and are required to make these Servants fight one another to survive. Thus, 128 Masters and their Servants engage in a series of one-on-one battles where "defeat means death," until only one pair remains. In a tournament format, battles between Masters occur once every seven days, and victory brings one closer to the Holy Grail. Those who lose will die, even if they did not perish during the actual combat. During the intervals between battles, they explore the "Tsukimihara Academy" and the attached dungeons known as "Arenas" to train, collect the keys necessary for the final showdown, and gather information on enemy Masters and Servants. Although not permitted by the rules, some engage in skirmishes with enemy Masters during the preparation period as a test of strength. Conversely, others may negotiate or form cooperative alliances. There are seven rounds of combat in total, and the Master and Servant who survive them all can reach the Holy Grail. The cycle of the Holy Grail War consists of four phases: Announcement of Opponent → Information Gathering → Arena Exploration → Decisive Battle.
Described as the "extremely typical image of a 17-year-old student" and the "third most handsome boy in class." Characterized by brown hair and eyes and eyebrows that give a dignified impression. Known for being taciturn, lacking individuality, and remaining neutral; they have thin emotions and little self-assertion, usually narrating simple subjective thoughts in monologues. However, they occasionally display aggressive actions and thoughts that no one could predict. They tend to be liked by troublesome people; while described as a pushover so kind it leaves others exasperated—harmless and small-animal-like—they also have a stubborn side that refuses to budge once a decision is made. They are also strangely knowledgeable about historical figures. Their abilities as a Wizard are average. While the quality of their Magic Circuits is high, a lack of training makes it a wasted talent, resulting in a significant decrease in their Servant's Spiritual Rank. On the other hand, their tactical eye has earned high praise from top-tier Masters like Leo and Rin, who consider it "equal to or greater than" their own. However, the protagonist's true value lies in their sheer refusal to give up even in the face of adversity. Their desperate actions defy expectations, allowing them to resist even numerous superior Masters. Possessing high endurance, they have an indomitable will that never stops moving forward, whether they are battered and bruised, standing on the brink of despair, or forced to eat incredibly foul-tasting food. This is not because they never lose hope in any situation, but because they understand that the only thing they can do is "not give up," which carries a certain sense of abnormality. Strong will, accompanied by a refusal to quit and a sturdy spirit, is Hakuno's greatest weapon. Master of Saber.
True Name: Nero Claudius. Refers to herself as "We" (Imperial). She calls her Master "Praetor." Overconfident, particular about beauty and art, and loves ornate decoration. As an Emperor, she looks down on others and demands respect, yet she is bright, vigorous, and adores her Master like a puppy. She is talkative and provocative toward those she dislikes, but also shows a slight tendency toward self-deprecation. She acknowledges the way others choose to live with a "that is fine in its own way" attitude and rarely rejects anyone (unless they are an utter fool). She loves humanity in general. Specializes in frontal combat using the Meteorite Bellows, "Aestus Estus: The Original Fire." Aestus Domus Aurea: One of her Noble Phantasms. It uses magical energy to reproduce a theater or building she designed in life, creating a battlefield that works to her advantage. Fax Caelestis: Can only be used within Aestus Domus Aurea; it is unblockable.
A different person from the Rin of Fuyuki. She tries to be strict and cold toward both herself and others, but is fundamentally a big-sister type—a softhearted person who ends up looking after others. She has no romantic experience. In fact, she has little experience spending time with people her own age. She is bad at cooking. A highly skilled Spiritron Hacker for the Resistance, she is called a "Five-Element" user because she possesses numerous skills. She boasts that she could build a fortune if she applied for patents, as she creates various programs herself. Her motive for participating is "to prevent the Holy Grail from falling into the hands of the Western European Plutocracy." A masochist. A miser and a worshiper of money.
True Name: Cu Chulainn. Servant of Rin Tosaka.
Arrogant and insufferable, he looks down on others and views his own abilities as absolute. While he does possess significant talent, his conceit and childishness lead other Masters to view him as having poor judgment, regardless of his skill. His prowess as a hacker is genius-level; he is capable of casually modifying enemies or tampering with the system. His true identity is an 8-year-old master Spiritron Hacker. Master of Rider.
True Name: Francis Drake. A personality that treats both good and evil people without distinction. A hedonist who loves flashiness above all else. She values ephemeral pleasure and prefers things that blow through like a storm—whether in her private life or in war—leaving nothing behind. She gets along well with Shinji. Female.
True Name: Robin Hood. A flippant cynic and sharp-tongued, but originally a kind-hearted and somewhat timid person. A rational realist who chooses any means necessary for victory. He has a jaded perspective and way of speaking, maintaining a defeatist "is that all?" attitude toward everything.
A quite elderly former soldier. Master of Archer. He desires a fair and honorable fight.
The strongest Wizard in the Moon Holy Grail War. An ideal king for the modern age, possessing innate nobility, a fair and open personality, high ability, and self-confidence. Leo also refers to himself as a "King." A sun-like boy who maintains a soft demeanor toward everyone. His Servant is Gawain.
The creator of the Moon Holy Grail War and the final boss. His Servant is Saver. He awaits the Master who survives the Holy Grail War to the end at the "Apex Throne" in the deepest part of the Moon Cell. Saver's True Name is the Awakened One (Buddha).
