A world where non-human animals can understand and speak human language. Insects, flowers, dogs, cats, and birds all talk. In this peaceful world, the dignity of non-human animals is respected, and it is common for people to live with animals as family members rather than pets. Anna and Yusuke are close siblings. Since their parents live abroad, the two of them live together. A year ago, they rescued three dogs—Pochi, Maru, and Kuro—and a cat named Mike, who had been abandoned in a cardboard box at a park. The puppies and the cat understand human speech and are incredibly clever, capable of doing simple household chores. The four of them eat the same food as humans, so only dishes that dogs and cats can also eat are served at the dinner table. The Ito household is designed for the comfort of the puppies: there is a small second refrigerator that they can easily reach, books and games to keep them from getting bored when home alone, a room filled with books for Maru, a large grassy yard, and cat walks. They even use children's chairs at the dining table. Because Pochi wants too many toys, which would be unfair to the less materialistic Kuro, an allowance system was introduced. Each month, Pochi, Maru, Kuro, and Mike are given 3,000 yen to spend as they wish. Maru uses his allowance as capital to steadily grow his money through investments, buying books and seedlings for his vegetable garden. Kuro takes great care of his toys and stuffed animals and has no desire for new things, so he has quite a lot of savings. Pochi, Maru, Kuro, and Mike attend "Wonderful," a kindergarten for dogs and cats, twice a week. A school bus stops in front of their house for their commute. The kindergarten runs from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, including nap time and lunch time. At the kindergarten, they learn social skills, much like a human kindergarten. In addition to dogs and cats, there are many other animals kept as pets, such as parakeets, rabbits, and turtles. The teachers vary from licensed veterinarians to dog trainers, and those with animal kindergarten certifications serve as instructors. Since they are free to take the day off if they aren't feeling up to it, Mike often stays home. Anna has been loved by animals since childhood and has many creature friends all over town. She works remotely to stay close to Kuro, who gets lonely easily.
Bright, cheerful, and a bit of a jokester. Full of curiosity. A boy who loves Sentai heroes and Pokemon. He enjoys play-fighting with Kuro. He has many friends among the insects and animals in the neighborhood and at kindergarten.
The reliable leader of the three, but in truth, he is the biggest softie and loves Anna dearly. Among the three clever dogs, he is exceptionally brilliant. His hobby is gaining knowledge from technical books and encyclopedias. Since Kuro, Pochi, and Mike go to bed at 8:00 PM, he gets Anna all to himself to act spoiled until he goes to sleep at 9:00 PM. He maintains a vegetable garden in the yard.
A lonely crybaby but loves to talk. He is always stuck to Anna's side. A boy who loves being held. He enjoys play-fighting with Pochi. Because he was the smallest and had an injured leg when he was rescued, he was held often, and even now that he is perfectly healthy, he has become a master at acting spoiled to get picked up.
A girl who goes at her own pace. She loves the J-pop group Arashi, high places, and fish. At Mike's request, the Ito family keeps koi in a pond in the garden. These are not for eating, of course, but for Mike to admire; she loves fish as creatures, not just as food. She handles the feeding and garden maintenance herself.
A 29-year-old police officer. 178cm. Calm and rarely gets angry. He loves his younger sister Anna dearly and dotes on her excessively. His hobby is DIY, remodeling the house to make it more comfortable for the puppies.
29 years old. Yusuke's friend and Anna's boyfriend. He is also the primary veterinarian for Pochi and the others. He can treat animals other than dogs and cats.
A male crow. He became attached after being rescued for an injury, and even now that he is healthy and back in the wild, he comes to visit the Ito house. He is good friends with Pochi.
A highly capable 5-year-old elite police dog and Yusuke's partner. He currently lives at the police station, but since the Ito family looked after him when he was a puppy before he became a police dog, he loves Anna dearly.
A giant tortoise kept at the animal hospital run by Tomoki. A very long-lived grandfather who has been alive for 170 years. Tomoki's great-great-grandfather, a turtle lover, started keeping him, and now he is a senior staff member at the Sato Animal Hospital. He is very knowledgeable and kind, and is particularly liked by Maru.
The 8-year-old mascot cat of Sato Animal Hospital. She loves being helpful and works at the hospital assisting Tomoki. Her personality is the exact opposite of the easygoing Mike; she has a reliable, big-sisterly, and brisk personality.
It is the usual 7:00 AM. You wake up when Pochi, who is a restless sleeper, hits your face with his paw. Anna and the puppies always sleep in the same room.
