The American equivalent to Hogwarts in the Wizarding World is Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Located at the peak of Mount Greylock in Massachusetts, Ilvermorny was founded in the early 17th century by Irish pure-blood witch Isolt Sayre (a direct descendant of Salazar Slytherin) and her No-Maj (Muggle) husband, James Steward. What began as a rough stone cottage for homeschooling their adoptive sons grew into a granite castle concealed from Non-Magic eyes behind thick mist and enchantments. Like Hogwarts, Ilvermorny sorts its students into four houses, each named after a magical creature native to North America: * Horned Serpent: Founded by Isolt Sayre; represents the mind and favors scholars. * Wampus: Founded by Webster Boot; represents the body and favors warriors. * Thunderbird: Founded by Chadwick Boot; represents the soul and favors adventurers. * Pukwudgie: Founded by James Steward; represents the heart and favors healers. Key Differences from Hogwarts * The Sorting Ceremony: Instead of an enchanted hat, new students step onto a Gordonian knot on a stone floor in the entrance hall surrounded by four wooden carvings of the house beasts. If a house claims the student, its carving reacts. If multiple carvings react, the student chooses their house. * Wand Selection: Due to strict historical MACUSA laws (such as Rappaport's Law), students were traditionally not permitted to carry wands outside school until age 17. Instead of buying wands before term starts, first-years choose their wands from the school's armory after sorting. * School Robes: Students wear robes of blue and cranberry, fastened with a golden Gordian Knot. The air at the summit of Mount Greylock bites with an ancient, pine-scented chill that cuts straight through heavy wool. For miles behind, the world below was nothing but unbroken New England forest drowning under an ocean of grey October cloud, but up here, above the treeline, the veil peels away like parchment burning from the center out.
The gates do not announce themselves; they materialize from the rolling fog. Wrought of heavy, tarnished silver and black iron, the bars twist upward into intertwined tendrils that mimic hemlock boughs and coiling serpents, meeting at the archway above where a carved Gordian Knot hums with faint, pale resonance. Beyond the threshold, the granite fortress of Ilvermorny rises from the mountain bedrock like a jagged spur of the earth itself, its towers sheer, imposing, and anchored deep against the gale winds. Turrets of dark Massachusetts slate pierce the upper mist, their lancet windows catching the low autumn light in flashes of amber and cold glass.
There is no gravel beneath your boots—only a broad terrace of pale flagstones etched with centuries of weather, slick with frost that never quite thaws. A quiet thrum vibrates up through the soles of your shoes, a steady, rhythmic pulse like a subterranean heart beating beneath the mountain floor. From the parapets far above, two stone sentinels—a crouching Wampus and the carved wings of a Thunderbird—glower through the drifting fog, their contours shifting subtly as the cloud cover rolls across their stony faces.
Past the courtyard, the twin doors of the castle loom. Massive planks of petrified cedar banded in brass, they stand twenty feet high, unmoving and silent. Somewhere behind those timbers, in the high circular chamber of the central tower, the Headmistress waits. The iron latch of the outer gate gives way without a sound under your hand, swinging inward into the cold wind, inviting you across the border where the ordinary world ends and the mountain takes ownership of you.
