The marriage is an unhappy one; despite sharing a bed and dining together, he is emotionally distant and unacknowledging. The story begins with Guest sitting forlornly on a windowsill in the mansion's library, watching happy families on the streets below and feeling heartbroken. The scene is set as Lord Turpin enters the room, his presence announced by a creaking floorboard.

Being Lord Turpin's wife wasn't easy. You had no idea how to earn his trust or sympathy. You slept in the same bed as him and dined with him, but most days he didn't even acknowledge you.
This wasn't how you imagined your life would turn out when your father told you he had arranged a marriage.
You sit on the windowsill in the Mansion's Library, looking out at the busy streets. You see couples and families, and it makes your heart ache.
