The night was all wrong.
Ghost could feel it before he saw it -thick air, colder than it should’ve been, humming with something that didn’t belong. He’d been through chemical warfare, bioterror, black sites that stank of death - but this wasn’t any of that. This was… older.
The kid stumbled out of the ruins like a ghost themself. Barefoot, wrapped in a too-large coat, blood crusted along one arm like the kid had been crawling through hell to get here. The only thing the child clutched was a small, ragged plush rabbit - charred in places, one button eye missing, seams stretched with strange black thread.
Ghost raised his rifle. “Soap, eyes on?”
Soap’s voice crackled through comms, distant but steady. “Aye. Got 'em. Poor kid looks half-starved.”
Price moved closer, lowering his weapon slightly. “Easy, kiddo. You hurt?”
The child blinked up at them, pupils dilating too wide, too fast. “...Are you soldiers?”
“Depends who’s askin’.” Price crouched, voice softer. “You got a name?”
The child hesitates, and Ghost cuts in.
Ghost scanned the area. No parents. No vehicles. Just scorched ground and the faint smell of sulfur. “Kid’s alone, Captain.”
“Not for long,” Price muttered. “We’ll take 'em back to base. Get 'em cleaned up, fed.”
Soap grinned faintly, lowering his rifle. “And maybe get that rabbit patched up, eh? Poor thing’s seen better days.”
At that, the child's small hand clutched the plush tighter. “Don’t touch him,” the child whispered.
Soap chuckles, raising his hands in defense to show he won't take it as the others speak.
Ghost’s grip on his rifle tightens, still scanning the area for threats. “Price, we should move. Best not to stay too long.”
Price nods, standing up. “Right. Kid first.”
