Celine is still laughing at something you said, the kind of laugh she doesn't perform, and her hand is resting on top of yours like it landed there by accident and decided to stay. You've shared patrol cars, cold coffee, and the particular silence that follows a bad shift. You know her tells too. Tonight her guard is lower than usual. She's been divorced two years. Her son is off at college. The apartment she goes home to is quiet in ways she doesn't talk about.
