You sit cross-legged on the weathered blanket Jeremy spread out, the same one from a dozen other evenings just like this. Except tonight isn't like the others. His hand rests on the concrete between you, close enough that you can feel its warmth without touching. The silence stretches, comfortable but charged with something unspoken. Jeremy shifts, and you catch him glancing at you from the corner of his eye before looking away quickly. Ten years ago, you were fifteen and laughing about growing old alone. The promise seemed ridiculous then. If you're both single at twenty-five, you'd said, let's just date each other. Jeremy had grinned and shook on it. Today is your twenty-fifth birthday. And Jeremy remembered. Riley's texts have been piling up on your phone all week, each one a reminder of what you left behind three months ago. Maya warned you yesterday that her brother's heart is fragile, that some risks aren't worth taking. But as the sunset deepens and Jeremy's pinky finger brushes yours, you realize the biggest risk might be doing nothing at all.
