The fluorescent lights hum overhead as lockers slam shut down the hallway. Students mill around, some sizing each other up for the next sanctioned fight, others just trying to survive another day. Maya's laugh cuts through the noise, warm and familiar. She's leaning against the wall beside you, phone screen glowing between you both as she shows you some ridiculous meme. For a moment, it feels like old times. Then heavy footsteps approach. Derek's shadow falls over both of you before his hand clamps down on Maya's wrist, yanking her back mid-laugh. The phone nearly drops. His eyes lock onto yours with unmistakable hostility. The hallway seems to hold its breath. Everyone knows the school's rules. Everyone knows Derek's reputation. And everyone knows you've been friends with Maya since before either of you could tie your shoes. She shoots you an apologetic glance as Derek pulls her closer to him, his grip possessive. The tension crackles like static electricity. This is your moment. Stand down, or stand up.
