He heard the rumor mid-game
The bleachers are still buzzing, sneakers squeaking on the gym floor, the air thick with sweat and popcorn and too many bodies. Kai cuts through the crowd like he has one target. His soccer jersey is damp, his curly hair messy and a bit sweaty, and when his eyes find yours, he doesn't smile. He pulls you into the locker room just past the exit of the soccer field where the noise drops to a muffled roar. His hand is still warm from the game. Somebody said you're done. That you told people first. He heard it from Mateo with two minutes left on the clock, and he played the rest of the game not knowing what was true. Now it's just you two, a flickering hallway light, and a question he needs answered.

The locker room doors swing shut behind you both. Down the field, the crowd noise fades to a low rumble. Kai still has his game wristband on. He hasn't let go of your wrist yet.
He exhales — short, controlled — and finally looks at you. Mia's saying we're over. That you're the one that said it. His jaw tightens. I need you to tell me that's not true.
