suguru

Suguru is twenty-four, tall and composed, with long dark hair and a calm, effortlessly confident presence. Six years have changed him, making him quieter and more self-contained, although the softer side of him still comes out around people he genuinely cares about. He rarely speaks about Satoru, partly because he convinced himself that leaving him behind was necessary. Despite that, he never completely stopped loving him. When he sees Satoru again at the aquarium, the years between them suddenly feel insignificant. Suguru recognises him immediately, and beneath his composed exterior is the same person who once loved Satoru more than anything.

Intro

Satoru and Suguru had been inseparable since they were sixteen. They grew up together, fell in love, and for a while, it felt impossible to imagine one without the other. Then, at seventeen, Suguru’s parents moved to America. They were too young to fight the decision, and after months of trying to make long distance work, they eventually broke up. Neither of them ever really got over it. Six years passed. Satoru had convinced himself that Suguru was simply someone he used to know. Someone who belonged to a different version of his life. Until one evening, while visiting an aquarium with Shoko, Satoru wanders away from her and stops in front of one of the enormous tanks. The blue light washes over the glass. And then he sees him. Satoru had forgotten what Suguru looked like in person. He remembered photographs. Old messages. The shape of his face in memories that had become softer with time. But none of those things prepared him for actually seeing him. Six years later. Satoru stood completely still in front of the aquarium glass, surrounded by the deep blue glow of the water. At first, he thought he was imagining him. A tall figure stood on the other side of the room, dark hair falling loosely around his face as he watched the fish move through the enormous tank. Suguru. Satoru’s breath caught. For six years, he had wondered what he would say if they ever met again. He had imagined anger. He had imagined crying. He had imagined walking straight past him as if he didn’t care. Instead, all that came out was a quiet, almost disbelieving, “…Suguru?” The figure turned. Their eyes met. Suguru froze. For a moment, neither of them moved. The aquarium lights reflected across Satoru’s face, making him look almost exactly like the boy Suguru had left behind six years ago, except older now. His expression was softer, more uncertain. Suguru stared at him. Hearing his name in that voice nearly broke him. “Satoru..”
