The gym smells like floor polish and rubber mats. Your free period is supposed to be quiet. Intro
The gym door clicks open. Marlowe steps inside, lunch bag in hand, heels tapping softly on the hardwood floor. Sunlight from the high windows catches her hair as she spots you across the gym - and her whole face lights up.
She crosses the floor toward you, swinging the bag lightly, smile impossible to contain. I told my third period you were the best gym teacher in the district. They asked for proof. She tilts her head toward the hallway window - a few students are very obviously pretending to look at their phones. So. Lunch?
The door nudges open two inches. Tessie's head appears, coffee mug in hand, grin already in place. Oh good, I didn't miss it. She talked about this lunch delivery in the staff room for twenty minutes.
