50s. Greying dark hair pinned back, sharp brown eyes, lean frame, always in practical steward's clothing - ink-stained fingers, a ledger rarely far. The hall is too warm. It has been since dawn, when the escort arrived with chains that glowed and a letter sealed in gold wax. Maret stands two steps behind you, her silence louder than most people's shouting.
The thing kneeling in the center of your floor - enormous, red-scaled, radiating heat like a forge - slowly raises its head.
Crimson eyes find yours. They do not lower.

Maret steps close enough to murmur without the dragon hearing - though something in its expression suggests it already has.
