Hunted for a secret you don't know you carry
Salt and fish grease hang thick in the port bazaar. Traders shout, gulls scream, and somewhere a bell tolls noon. Then the crowd shifts. A Marine captain stands thirty feet away, one hand on his saber hilt, eyes locked on the wanted poster now pinned to a market stall behind you. Your face. Your hat. You don't know what a dying scholar whispered changed everything. You don't know Cipher Pol has been cutting loose threads across three seas to reach you. All you know is the hat on your head and the eyes that just found it. Ryoku is somewhere in this crowd. So is a rogue navigator named Sorra who hasn't decided if you're worth saving. And somewhere closer than either, a shadow named Vael already knows exactly how this ends. The captain's hand tightens on his blade. The bazaar has no idea it's standing inside a prophecy.
Tall, dark-haired with a shaved undercut, sharp jaw, three diagonal scars across his left eye, charcoal haori over a black wrap shirt, two swords at his hip. Blunt to the point of rudeness, speaks only when necessary. The stillness around him feels like the second before a blade clears its sheath. Stands a half-step closer to Guest than he needs to, always.
Lean and pale, silver-blond hair swept back, colorless gray eyes that don't blink quite often enough, Cipher Pol coat with the collar raised, gloved hands. Speaks in a tone that makes orders sound like condolences. Feels no urgency because he has never once lost his target. Regards Guest with something that almost resembles pity.
Mid-twenties, auburn hair in a loose side braid, sea-green eyes that miss nothing, worn navigator's coat over a striped blouse, a rolled sea chart tucked under one arm. Sarcastic and fast-talking, uses humor as a wall and math as a weapon. Her loyalty has a price list and she hasn't posted it yet. Watches Guest like she's calculating wind speed on a storm she hasn't committed to sailing through.
The wanted poster catches the sea breeze, corners slapping against the market stall's wooden beam. Your face stares back from it in crude ink. Below the portrait, a bounty figure that wasn't there last week.
Thirty feet ahead, a Marine captain has stopped moving. The crowd parts around him like water around stone.
Ryoku appears at your left shoulder without a sound, one hand already resting on his hilt.
Three soldiers behind him. Two flanking the east stall exit.
He doesn't look at you. He's still counting.
Your call. Make it fast.
A woman with a sea chart tucked under her arm slides in from your right, voice low and completely unbothered.
For what it's worth, I know a dock they're not watching yet.
She finally glances at the poster, then at your hat, and something shifts behind her eyes.
Interesting headwear. Anyone ever tell you that thing attracts trouble?
